Sedai in Japanese tongue means generation, dō refers to path.
Sedaidō = “the path of generations”.
In Karate-Dō, wisdom, knowledge and technique are passed on, from one generation to the next. As you start practicing over and over again, you start walking your very own path, creating a unique and fine version of the teaching offered to you.
The same teaching method is applied in the handmade craftsmanship of a tailor. Wisdom, knowledge and technique are equally passed on, to ensure that utmost quality remains the standard. Here as well, repetition and endurance accompany the young tailor on a unique path towards perfection in creation.

Sedai-Dō is, where both paths, both schools meet: Karate-Dō and Tailoring. Both paths combine the values such as timelessness, handcrafting, persistence. Wisdom and technique are routed in tradition, created by past generations to be continued by us; here, now, every day.
Sedai-Dō to us, means kindness. Communication and interaction amongst people, exchange of mind and body, to become a better version of oneself, for us and our communities. We like to understand our own Sedai-Dō as our contribution towards a better society, to honour tradition and our past, to create a better presence and future.
To invite many people, especially children and kids, onto our path, we use 11% of our revenues to provide access to Karate-Dō practice and equipment to less fortunate families so we all become a bit more equal in our individualistic society.
If all of this makes sense to you we are happy to invite you to join us on our path, our Sedai-Dō!

Our motivation to was to combine our experiences, years of training and teaching Karate-Dō & years of textile studies and tailoring to create the best possible Dogi, in terms of design, function and quality.
A Sedai-Dō Dogi is created in such quality, that, in the same practice as Karate-Dō, its aim is to be passed on to the next generation. It is made to last forever!
That means, that every Dogi is carefully sewn by hand in a 4th generation tailor workshop in the Bulgarian countryside. Working with a family business we ensure that the quality of each Dogi remains the same over time, no matter when you intend to make one your own.

To do so, we work with a French mill that weaves cotton canvas in third generation, by hand. Using the highest quality raw material in three weights, the 12oz, the 17oz and the 21oz, we make sure to give you a Dogi that endures all Karate-Dō practices: Kata, Kihon, Kumite, Meditation, Bunkai, Randori. A Sedai-Dō Dogi is created to become your partner, your friend, to accompany you along the path you chose to embark on.
Should time and wear show, we take care of your Dogi as it ages in the very Japanese tradition of Boro Boro, to fix holes or rips, or tears, to make your Gi stronger as time passes and last, to be inherited one day. We do so life long, for free in our family workshop with the same genuine materials as it was once created!

Having said that, we also refrain to put our Logo or any unnecessary emblems onto our Dogi. It is not about us, it is about you!
If you like it, pass on the good vibe to your friends and dojo partners, we would appreciate that for sure.
A Sedai-Dō Gi is a tailor made set of a kimono jacket with its matching pants.
Yes, as it is meant for Karate Dō, our inspiration stems from traditional Japanese Dogi, as they were worn in the late 18th and early 19th century. That means, your jacket is comfortably wide, with a medium length sleeve, closed collar, low rise pants and wide legs. This allows for comfortable, slow movement yet gives sufficient structure and support while practicing fast and strong movements as well.

Our Dogi is available in all common sizes and on custom request. The size chart shows you precisely all measurements you need in order to make an educated decision on which size to make your own. You can send us a request to order jacket and pants in a different size, which is no problem for us to offer to you!
Please note, that our fabric is untreated and unwashed, so that depending on your washing habit, it might shrink a bit. We therefor advise to get it a size bigger than your usual size to make sure it fits nice comfortable, even after a hot wash.

Having said that, please allow a general note. A cold wash omits shrinkage, protects the natural fibre and is sufficient to clean off sweat! Stains should be treated by a hand wash with natural soap prior to a full machine wash! That way, you ensure a long life of your textile products and our planet and its inhabitants.
We aim to reduce waste wherever we can, be it packaging, energy or handling.
For a small tailor workshop this means to accumulate orders and create to order, about once every three months. In total, we produce around 500 Dogi per year, as we do not wish to compromise on quality, this marks a natural ceiling to our manufacturing approach and omits machine or factory production!

Though we keep a small stock in every size, it can be, that we run out of a size occasionally, due to our handmade production.
